Open Learning program handbook

What is the Open Learning program?

The Open Learning program is a part-time, open admission, distance-only mode of study, providing access to degree credit university courses for individuals who wish to study independently, but are not interested in pursuing a degree at the University of Guelph at the present time. You may register in the Open Learning program, even if you are registered at another educational institution. The Open Learning program extends the academic resources of the University to those interested in professional updating, personal enrichment or eventual application to a degree program. The Open Learning program is offered through the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support.

Three 12-week semesters a year provide maximum flexibility. Selected courses are offered from the University of Guelph’s areas of specialization. Open Learning courses are designed to meet the rigorous standards required for university credit and are comparable to on-campus classes in workload. Generally, each course comes with a course website that may be accompanied by a manual, videotapes, DVDs, audio CDs, CD-ROMs, etc., depending on the nature of the course. As well, all courses incorporate computer conferencing, e-mail, computer-based quizzes, and the Internet.

A wide variety of courses are also available on a not-for-credit basis or for continuing education units, (CEUs). Contact the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support for more information. This handbook includes information about University of Guelph administrative policies, procedures and services, as well as a list of whom to contact when you require assistance. The back section of this handbook contains forms that you may need throughout the semester. By reading this material carefully, it will help ensure that your experience as an Open Learning program student will be as rewarding as possible.

Please note: Information may change throughout the academic year and these changes will be posted on the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support website.
