Description

Introduction to Plant Identification teaches the basics of plant classification and naming using tools such as dichotomous keys and identification manuals. Students will learn identification tips, how to use the binomial naming system, how plants are collected for classification and storage as well as the key plant structures and characteristics used in identification. Students are also given the opportunity to use these tools and become familiar with them through the identification of common evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and vines, herbaceous plants, and indoor plants.

This course is accredited by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 3.6 GCSAA education points. These education points are applicable towards Class A and certification entry and renewal for GCSAA members.

Course Topics

  • Basic plant structure and anatomy.
  • Botanical and taxonomic keys are used to identify unknown plant species.
  • Herbaria and plant specimen collection.
  • Herbaceous Plants - Includes annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs and ornamental grasses.
  • Evergreen Trees, Shrubs and Ground Covers - Includes growth characteristics, use in the landscape and suggested cultivars.
  • Deciduous Trees and Shrubs -Growth characteristics, including flowers and fruit, are described as well as cultural requirements and uses in the landscape.
  • Vines - Discuss the use of common vines in the landscape including planting techniques.
  • Indoor Plants - The cultural requirements and environmental conditions are discussed, as well as a review of common indoor plants.
